Lehighton girls cruise

Won-loss records can be deceiving.

An opponent who comes up against a team with a losing record might think they could be in store for an easy "W."Think again if your opponents is the Lehighton girls' basketball team.Friday night, the Lady Indians won their third consecutive game with a 53-38 triumph over Tamaqua.Lehighton coach Eric Gidney likes that his team is making adjustments and playing with more consistency."We are keeping our focus," Gidney said. "Tonight we changed defenses from man to zone to a diamond-and-one not only to keep Tamaqua guessing, but more importantly, to keep on us our toes and it worked."With the score tied at six, the Indians (7-10) had some concern when their second leading scorer, Skylynn Faust, picked up her third foul with 5:30 to go in the first period."She had a few unnecessary fouls because she was in the wrong space on the court," said Gidney. "Skylynn is a great rebounder for us, but when she had to come out, the rest of our girls stepped up their game."With Faust on the bench, Lehighton outscored Tamaqua 9-4 with a jumper by Celina Fital, a driving lay up by Alli Rossino and two free throws by Aubrey Blasiak. In the second period, Lehighton maintained its advantage over the Raiders. Fital scored seven of her nine total points in the session. Tamaqua was able to stay in striking range on the free throw accuracy of Kirstin Jones and jump shots by Paige Demetriades and Brianna Wittig. Lehighton, however, continually drew fouls in the lane and went to the free throw stripe 15 times in the period, making nine to pull ahead at 29-16 with 1:28 left."There is no question that Lehighton is much better than their record might indicate," said Tamaqua coach Joe Berezwick. "They have several players who can put up the points."Down by nine at the half, Berezwick tried to rally his troops."Despite our first half breakdowns, I felt we were still in the game," he said. "We switched to a zone defense to try and knock them off beat."Unfortunately for the Raiders, Lehighton's quick pass, ball movement, motion offense produced the first seven points in the third quarter and on Blasiak's side jumper at the 5:30 mark, the advantage has grown to 36-20."It's nice to see the maturation in our team," said Gidney. "Our three guards, all exceptional ball handlers, complement each other. Rossino grabs a lot of loose rebounds and starts our breakouts. Aubrey is our perimeter weapon, and Riley Durishin is our slasher to the basket."Durishin slashed her way for nine trips to the foul line on her way to a 10 point night. Faust returned to add to the offense and her put back with one minute left in the third lifted her team to a 43-26 advantage. Blasiak's second three-pointer with three seconds to go increased the margin to 48-26.Tamaqua managed to outscore the Tribe in the fourth as Courtney Hoffman scored a bucket and four free throws."We are still alive for a playoff run," said Gidney, "but we have to keep winning to try and pull us up to a .500 record."Right now I have to like our chances."TAMAQUAHartung 1-2-4-4, Demetriades 2-3-4-7, Hoffman 1-4-4-6, Jones 1-3-4-5, Wittig 4-0-0-9, Baddick 0-0-0-0, Solt 2-1-2-5, Ligenza 1-0-0-2, Pratka 0-0-0-0, McVicker 0-0-0-0, Shamonsky 0-0-0-0, Hromyak 0-0-0-0.
