Bowmanstown chimney fire extinguished

Creosote buildup caused heavy smoke to emerge from a chimney atop a Bowmanstown home early this morning.

However, no damage was done to the home at 536 Ore St. after firefighters from several municipalities had the matter under control within minutes.Tony and Catherine Hudak, who own the home, said they were inside at the time of the incident, shortly before 8 a.m."When I got here, heavy dark brown smoke was coming out of the chimney," borough assistant Fire Chief Bruce Koch said. Witnesses said they saw flames shooting out of the chimney and notified the Hudaks.Koch said it took firefighters less than five minutes to extinguish the smoke."We got one heck of a response," he said. "It is unprecedented that we have so many guys here."Koch cautioned homeowners to be more diligent in keeping their chimneys clean, and conscious of what they're burning, especially this time of year. The Palmerton Fire Department, Parryville Fire Department, and Diamond Fire Company of Walnutport also assisted at the scene.
