Rynkiewicz adds 100th win to accomplishments

Saturday's Schuylkill League championship was just the latest in a long line of accomplishments for Tamaqua's Dylan Rynkiewicz.

Coming into this year, Rynkiewicz had already won a Schuylkill League title in addition to qualifying for the Class AA Southeast Regional tournament after a third-place finish in the District 11 tournament. But the senior's greatest achievement may have come earlier this season, when he captured his 100th career victory against Bloomsburg during Central Columbia's Bob Rohm Memorial Wrestling Tournament. The distinction is one that's not only a testament to Rynkiewicz's skill, but also to his dedication to the sport."Every offseason, it's been a priority to keep working by joining a club team and pushing to keep getting better," he said. "Now, I can see how all of those tournaments and all of those workouts have paid off."And I just got accepted to college (Roger Williams University, a Division III school) so it's a huge weight lifted off my shoulders having my 100th win under my belt. Now I can just focus on the rest of the season and doing well at districts and in the postseason."While Rynkiewicz will concentrate on what lies ahead, Tamaqua head coach Jon Mashack offered some perspective on just how significant his milestone truly is."That's probably any quality wrestler's first goal entering their junior or senior year," Mashack noted. "Districts, regionals and states are obviously the primary goal, but that's an accomplishment unlike any other."Looking at our team alone, we have maybe a handful of guys that have reached 100 wins in school history. So for them to get their name on the wall and be in that club, it's a very big accomplishment."I think Dylan really, really enjoyed the moment when he got it. It really is another feather in his cap to let him know that he does have quality skills and that the work he's put in is paying off."Rynkiewicz and other Tamaqua wrestlers have also benefited from a healthy amount of success within the program over the last few years, highlighted by 2014 graduate Colin Mashack's second trip to the PIAA Wrestling Championships last March."It sets their expectations and it helps to set their goals," coach Mashack said. "Having kids at that level in the room brings everybody up. If you don't have that, you're really missing a component that's vital to the team's development."And when you have kids that are around the same weight class and very talented, it just makes it that much better."Though Rynkiewicz didn't technically make it to Hershey last year, he was still able to take in the experience with Colin, something he hopes will prepare him for a potential return trip this year."When Colin qualified last year, he asked me to go with him to help him workout, so I was able to be on the mat with him and workout with him, which was great," Rynkiewicz said. "I was kind of shell-shocked being out there. But hopefully when I get out there, it's going to feel just like home and I'll know what I need to do to be successful."Currently 23-2 and widely recognized as one of the best in Pennsylvania, it's clear Rynkiewicz has a lot to look forward to, both now and in the future."I think all of his accomplishments have really validated his skills in his own mind," Mashack said. "He's come into this season with more intent, and he's already signed to wrestle in college, so he knows other coaches are interested in him."All of those things have really made him believe in himself, and Dylan is showing that on the mat this season."
