Northern Lehigh approves Patriot Club
As evidenced by their actions, patriotism reigns supreme at Northern Lehigh High School.
On a 7-0 vote, the school board on Wednesday approved the creation of the Patriot Club. Directors Donna Kulp and Natalie Green were absent.The creation of the club was requested by the senior high administration and will promote patriotism, as students will raise and lower the flags at the high school.The club went into effect Thursday, and meets during homeroom and after school.School board recognition monthAlso on Wednesday, the board approved a resolution that recognizes January as school board director recognition month.Superintendent Michael Michaels said the board has nine members whose hearts are in the right place."They always say 'is this good for the kids,'" Michaels said. "I'm very proud to work with these nine individuals."Michaels said the board members really care about the students, about the district and about its legacy."Northern Lehigh is the hidden gem of the region," he said. "We don't want to hear what we can't do, we want to hear what we can do."Other businessIn other business, the board:• Appointed the law firm of Steckel & Stopp as solicitors for the school district for 2015. The hourly rate will be $124 per hour for general services, and $144 per hour for litigation related services. The hourly rate for staff will be $96 per hour. These rates represent a $2 per hour increase over last year's rates. In a related matter, the board also approved the retainer fee for the 2014-15 school year at $2,000, which represents a $1,000 increase over last year's adjusted rates.• Appointed Angela Henninger as Slatington Elementary School cook's helper, replacing Connie Andrews, who retired, at a salary of $9 per hour, three hours per day, five days per week, up to 180 student days per year plus additional cleaning days as needed, effective Thursday, with a 60-day probationary period ending March 13.• Approved James Fisher, social studies, and Anthony Thomas, elementary K-4, as substitute teachers.• Approved Dawn Martinez as a substitute instructional aide for the 2014-15 school year.• Approved a conference request by Bryan Geist to attend the 48th annual Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors Association Conference March 17-20 at the Hershey Lodge with the cost of registration $225, and lodging $529, to be funded from the Athletic Department Budget.
