Patients and employees of the White Haven sanitarium formed a fire brigade to successfully battle a fire that began in the institution's Catholic chapel. Damage was estimated at $600 as the larger buildings weren't scorched.

A night nurse discovered the blaze shortly before midnight. She sounded the alarm and within minutes, patients had hopped from their beds to join various employees to make a formidable firefighting band. The flames were brought under control within an hour.
