It's worth a trip to the farm show

Pennsylvania has a real gem.

It's the Pennsylvania Farm Show this week in Harrisburg.Hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.There are more than just farm animals. The farm show is not just about cows, sheep, chickens, horses and pigs, although these animals play a big role.At the top of every visitor's list is the food court, which consists of choices solely from Pennsylvania. People can purchase old-fashioned milk shakes, baked potatoes, roast beef sandwiches, corn-on-the-cob, waffles, mozzarella cubes, salads, deep-fried mushrooms, doughnuts, cinnamon buns, and more.You can see a lot of farm equipment, but you'll also view exhibits on renewable energy sources, recipes, health topics, other environmental subjects, as well as commercial vendors.Youngsters who participate in the farm show don't just display livestock. On the second floor, you'll find an assortment of clothing stitched together by children as young as 9 or 10, quilts, blankets, cakes, pies and candy.Other items exhibited are Christmas trees, honey, plants and produce.A main attraction is the butter sculpture.Getting back to livestock, the youngsters who come to the farm show are amazing at handling animals that weigh nearly a ton.You won't believe how incredible these kids are at shearing sheep and milking cows.The farm show brings out the best of our young people.These kids are knowledgeable and are glad to answer questions from passers-by.They know how to work individually and as a team. They know the meaning of the words respect and pride.
