State troopers report multiple area crashes
State police at Lehighton reported on the following crashes investigated by troopers.
Troopers said a one-vehicle crash occurred at 8 p.m. on Jan. 3 along Strohls Valley Road, at the intersection with Homestead Lane, in Towamensing Township, Carbon County. Troopers said Zachary R. Moyer, 23, of Orefield, was driving a 1997 Ford F150 truck too fast for conditions as he attempted to negotiate a downhill left-hand curve. Due to the high rate of speed and slippery road conditions the truck traveled through a clearly posted stop sign on Homestead Lane, and continued in a southeast direction onto Strohls Valley Road.The truck then went onto the south berm and struck a tree head-on. After impact Moyer fled the scene. The truck was towed. Troopers said Moyer was cited for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed.Troopers investigated a crash at 3:40 p.m. Jan. 4 along White Street in Bowmanstown. Troopers said Johnny J. Yurkunas, 39, of Palmerton, was driving a 2008 Ford Edge westbound when he fell asleep at the wheel. His vehicle collided with a parked 2012 Ford Escape. The impact caused the Escape to spin clockwise and collide with a utility pole. The top of the pole snapped off and fell onto the roof of the Escape.No one was injured. Yurkunas was cited for the crash.A one-vehicle crash was reported at 7:03 a.m. Jan. 5 along Stone Hill Road in Ross Township, Monroe County. Troopers said Peter J. Romeo, 50, of Saylorsburg, was driving a 2004 Ford F350 truck southbound and approaching the intersection with Dogwood Lane, when he swerved to avoid a deer. He overcorrected his attempt to avoid the deer with the truck entering the berm and hitting a tree.Romeo was not injured but the truck had to be towed.A one-vehicle crash was reported at 10:35 a.m. Jan. 6 along Kunkletown Road, near Mountain View Drive, in Polk Township, Monroe County. Troopers said Jessi E. Steinmetz, 19, of Nazareth, was driving a 2000 Dodge Stratus westbound and attempting to negotiate a right curve when she lost control on the snow-covered road. The rear end of the car began to slide over the center line and slid into the guide rail along the north berm. The front end impacted with the guard rail.Steinmetz was not injured. She was cited for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed.Another one-vehicle crash occurred at 1:35 p.m. Jan. 8 along Hatchery Road in Penn Forest Township. Troopers said Tiffany L. Schermerhorn, 18, of Kunkletown, was driving a 2008 Suzuki Reno southbound and entered a slight bend in the road. She lost control on the snow-covered road and struck the guide rail along the berm causing major damage to the vehicle. After impact the car continued about 135 feet and struck the guide rail again causing minor damage to the front end. It then continued another 234 feet before coming to rest on the berm.Schermerhorn was not injured. She was cited for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed.A one-vehicle crash occurred about 1:14 p.m. on Jan. 9 along Turkey Drive, in the Evergreen Lake Estates, in Polk Township. Cesar D. Gomez, 22, of Effort, was driving a 2009 Honda Accord too fast for the icy and snow-covered conditions. His vehicle left the road and struck a tree along the berm.No injuries were reported but the car was towed. Troopers cited Gomez in the incident.Troopers investigated a one-vehicle crash at 3:18 p.m. on Jan. 10 along Blue Mountain Drive in Lehigh Township, Northampton County. Lindsey C. Cortese, 32, of Bethlehem, was driving a 2000 Subaru Outback southbound near Blue Mountain Ski Resort when she swerved to miss a part of a guide rail on the road. She lost control and struck the guide rail.Cortese was not injured, but the vehicle had to be towed. She was cited for the crash.
