Pottsville sweeps Raiders

Two programs that are on different ends of their "rebuilding or reloading" cycles clashed in a Schuylkill League dual meet on Tuesday.

Pottsville had a strong showing, as the Crimson Tide swept Tamaqua on both the boys and girls sides. The boys were victorious 126-40, as the girls alson won by a 111-65 final. The Tide has a large senior class and a number of different swimmers capable of winning a given race as Pottsville totalled 11 different individual winners."We're trying to work on our depth," explained Pottsville head coach Ned Hampford. "That's what is ultimately going to win the league. We're going to desperately need depth when we get to districts and we have plenty of young kids moving up."Madeline Consugar was the Tide's only multi-event winner, as she was victorious in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle.Hampford said, "It's that point of the year where you do a whole lot of training. The kids are tired and sore. Some kids are sick, we're in and out of school. You're not looking for lifetime best performances at this point, but we had a few today."On the other hand, Tamaqua is more toward the rebuilding stage of its program."Tamaqua has been a strong program for a number of years," said first year Raider head coach Al Bostdorff. "Unfortunately, we're at an in-between time right now. We're very thin on swimmers. A lot of our kids on our high school team did not come through our developmental program which hurts us a little bit.""One of my big challenges is to take a kid who is a sophomore or a junior and teach them fundamentals. The other part of the challenge is that cardio vascular development which is learned at a young age. Although I can teach fundamentals, it can't make up for the cardio vascular part in a very aerobic sport."Although Tamaqua might not be big in quanity, it certainly displayed some quality swimming.Rebecca Kanaskie, Danielle DeCindio and Emily Andrews were all part of two relay victories while Kanaskie also had individual first place finishes in the 100 breast and 200 IM. DeCindio won both the 50 free and 100 fly."We're trying to take a limited group of kids and trying to get the best out of them, said Bostdorff. "We're trying to get them to do their personal bests and hopefully some reinforcements come in next year. Every performance we hope to improve."My kids know that I am not letting up through these meets. We are swimming hard right through them. If you can stay with my training and have some confidence we will be where we want to be at the end of the road. We represented ourselves very well today."Hampford always enjoys the challenge of swimming against Tamaqua around this time of the season."It's always good to come here to Tamaqua. Everyone always gives you good competition here and that's all you can ask for. We were looking for good effort and that's what we got, so we're very happy."BOYSPottsville 126, Tamaqua 40200 Medley Relay - 1.
