A Lehigh County man was placed on probation this week after pleading guilty to charges stemming from an incident at a Carbon County hospital.
Samuel Guadalupe, 67, of Allentown, entered pleas in two pending cases that stem back over four years ago. He pleaded to three counts of simple assault and one of criminal mischief. The first incident occurred on Nov. 15, 2010, when borough police were called to the Behavioral Health Unit of the Blue Mountain Health Systems Lehighton Campus.Guadalupe, who was a patient in the unit, had attacked two staff members, Kenneth Cathcart and Michael Engle. The second incident occurred on Nov. 29, 2010, at the hospital. Borough police were called to the emergency room for a man out of control.Police learned that Guadalupe was at the facility with mental health issues and damaged some hospital equipment and threw a medical chart at nurse Jean Kirk. The case has taken a long time to reach conclusion as there have been 43 continuances in the case. Those continuances were caused by Guadalupe receiving inpatient psychiatric treatment. Before the start of the plea hearing, President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II heard, by phone conference, from a psychiatrist who has treated Guadalupe for several years. Nanovic ruled that at the time of the two incidents Guadalupe was mentally ill, however, he also ruled that his mental status was clear enough to enter the guilty pleas.Nanovic place him on probation for two years on each case, running consecutively, and ordered he continue his mental health treatment program, pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation.
