Cheerleading teams qualify for state competition

A pair of Times News area cheerleading teams have qualified for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association State Championship Competition.

That distinction came after Pleasant Valley won the medium division, while Lehighton placed fifth in the small division at the third annual PIAA District XI Competitive Spirit Championship held Saturday at Easton Area Middle School.With an overall score of 223, Pleasant Valley easily outdistanced itself from runner-up Easton, which finished with a score of 207, in the medium division.Meanwhile, Lehighton placed fifth in the small division after it registered a score of 166.3.The PIAA District XI qualifies a total of 12 squads to the PIAA State Championship Competition, to be held on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24 in the Hershey Giant Arena.The top five squads from the small division, top three squads from the medium division, top two squads from the large division, and the champion of the coed division all qualify for the state championship competition.The final qualifier was the next highest scoring squad regardless of division.Results from the 2014-15 PIAA Competitive Spirit Championship are as follows:Small Division• Champion: Wilson, 212• Runner-up: Whitehall, 196.6• Third place: Parkland, 194.2• Fourth place: Liberty, 182.1• Fifth place, Lehighton, 166.3• Sixth place: Emmaus, 164.5• Seventh place, East Stroudsburg North, 136.8.• Eighth place, Williams Valley, 105Medium Division• Champion: Pleasant Valley, 223• Runner-up: Easton, 207• Third place: Freedom, 185• Fourth place: Southern Lehigh, 174.5• Fifth place: Blue Mountain, 163Large Division• Champion: Pocono Mountain West, 221• Runner-up: Nazareth, 202• Third place: Northampton, 171.5• Fourth place: Stroudsburg, 151Coed Division• Champion: Allentown Central Catholic, 192.1• Runner-up: Pocono Mountain East, 167.6
