Icy road conditions blamed for crashes
Icy road conditions were blamed for several crashes Monday along Schuylkill County roads.
State police at Frackville investigated a crash at 8:50 a.m. along Route 895 (Summer Valley Road), in East Brunswick Township. Troopers said Sara E. Welsh, 30, of Tamaqua, was driving a 1998 Honda Civic westbound when she lost control due to icy conditions. The car went onto the north berm and struck a utility pole head-on. Welsh and passenger Luke Welsh, 3, Tamaqua, were belted and not injured. Damages were disabling to the front end of the car. Welsh was cited for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed.A one-vehicle crash was reported along Route 443 (Clamtown Road), in East Brunswick Township. No time for the crash was listed. Troopers said Miledys B. Batista, 53, of Tamaqua, was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle westbound when she lost control on the icy road. The car went onto the north berm, where it struck a tree along an embankment, rolled and came to rest on its roof along the north berm.Batista and her passenger, Sonia A. Payero-Nunez, 34, of Tamaqua, were both taken by ambulance to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, with non-life threatening injuries, troopers said. The car had to be towed.Troopers cited Batista for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed. Assisting at the scene were volunteers from the New Ringgold Fire Company and ambulance.A one-vehicle crash occurred at 8:41 a.m. along Highridge Road in Cass Township. Troopers said Edward V. Fredericks, 41, of Pottsville, was driving 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 truck westbound and ascending a grade in a gradual left curve. Fredericks lost control due to the slush-covered road and failed to negotiate the curve. The truck continued to slide straight, crossed the westbound median and went down an embankment, traveling about 40 feet. It then hit two trees.Fredericks was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Damages were termed severe to the truck. He was cited for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed.
