The Washington Township supervisors last week voted to adopt an ordinance to join Slatington and Walnutport in a joint municipal authority.
The purpose is to support an authority to provide recreation for people of all ages and make getting money easier because of having a larger group.Resident Ed Ziegler pointed out that Walnutport had turned down the ordinance.Supervisor Josh Friebolin said Washington voted on the ordinance to show support.Discussions will begin anew with possible amendments to make it acceptable to Walnutport.Friebolin added that a community center will be beneficial to residents of the three municipalities."It's back to the drawing board," he said.An ordinance will be advertised forbidding junk, unlicensed or unregistered vehicles parked on the roads. It would be a summary offense with a fine between $50 and $200 plus court costs and a possible 90-day prison sentence. The state police will not take action because the township does not have an ordinance, officials said.Joel Merkel, Friedens Fire Company fire chief, said he has not seen the appointed emergency management coordinator, George Kern, in two years. He had been reappointed without being present, and supervisors will check.Dwayne Henritzy was not reappointed fire marshal at the reorganization meeting. The mistake was corrected.Resident John Perich said people are burning leaves which are supposed to be picked up by the township.A $30,000 grant was received for a leaf vacuum. He said sometimes plastics are being burned also. It will be investigated.Ziegler last month commented on a guiderail that was needed near a culvert and nothing has been done.Ziegler invested $75,000 in a site for the community center and sold it to the group at his cost.He would like to see it move forward.
