Record amount of drug arrests in Jim Thorpe

Drug arrests reached a record high in Jim Thorpe Borough in 2014, according to Mayor Michael Sofranko.

During a year-end report delivered to council Thursday night, Sofranko said 63 people were charged with drug-related offenses. Not only did that number set a record, it blew past totals out of the water.“We’ve probably had seven or eight in a year before,” Sofranko said. “It’s the thing I’m most proud of in regards to our department this year.”In past months, Sofranko and Borough Police Chief Joseph Schatz said personnel had been shifted around to allow officers, specifically Officer Matthew Swartz, to focus on drug investigations.“There is a drug problem in Jim Thorpe,” Sofranko surmised. “Is it as bad some of the big cities? No. But, we don’t live in Mayberry anymore. Our police are doing a good job trying to keep the quality of life where it is at.”For more, read upcoming print editions of the Times News.
