Palmerton holds off Crusaders
In its last game, Palmerton held a 12-point halftime lead over Southern Lehigh, only to see the Lady Spartans storm back, tie the score, and eventually claim a 10-point victory.
On Friday night, the Lady Bombers were faced with a similar situation against Notre Dame of Green Pond. Palmerton held a 37-29 lead after three frames, only to see the Lady Crusaders go on a 10-0 run to take a 39-37 edge with 6:34 remaining in the contest.Instead of allowing the Crusaders to maintain the advantage, Palmerton produced its own 10-0 run to retake the lead (47-39) with 3:20 left. From there, with the Crusaders forced to foul, the 'Parade to the free throw line' yielded a 10-of-12 showing by the hosts, spurring the Bombers to an important 57-48 Colonial League win.The victory also qualifying the Bombers for the district playoffs."I thought we bounced back from that run with great intensity," Palmerton head coach Rod Strohl said. "I thought Jade (Farquhar) played remarkably and it seemed that everything she did spurred the other girls on to match her efforts."Farquhar, who finished the game with 30 points (15-of-18 FT), had 14 of the Bombers' 20 points in the fourth frame."At halftime, we thought about the Southern Lehigh game and that we can't let that happen again," said Farquhar. "So we sat in our circle, before the coaches came in, and talked about what we could do differently to prevent that same thing. We came together, we communicated well, and we pulled it together and got the win."After the winners' momentum-changing run, the Crusaders' Sam Cabone drilled two treys to cut the Bomber lead to five, but that was as close as her team would get the remainder of the way."We knew it was going to be a tough game to win, coming in here," Notre Dame head coach Josh Kopp said. "But after we made that run and took the lead, we felt pretty good because we had the momentum and we knew that (Palmerton) had recently been in a game situation like that. But give credit to them for responding the way they did."Early on, Notre Dame was the aggressor, as they went out to a 15-8 lead, with three minutes left in the first. However, Palmerton managed to outscore its opponent 10-2 from there, and took an 18-17 edge after one. Gabby Altmire's nine points matched 10 from Farquhar in the session.Madison Mummey scored all but one of the the Bombers' nine points in the second, as Palmerton (11-2) increased its lead to 27-22 at the break. In Coach Strohl's opinion, one of the biggest buckets came in the third, as the Lady Crusaders pulled to within four at 33-29 off an Altmire triple, amping up the Crusader faithful and teetering the momentum in the visitors' favor. However, Mummey fed Farquhar on an inside-outside trey from the right wing to help the Bombers maintain their edge, 37-29, after three."Jade hitting that three-pointer after (Altmire) made hers was huge because that kept the momentum on our side when it easily could have gone over to them," Strohl said. "I'm so proud of this team and the way they play together. I'm proud of everything they did tonight, but we have to keep doing those things. If the girls can match this same intensity that they played with tonight, I think we'll be fine with our goals and what we want to get done."Outside of Farquhar's game-high 30 points, Mummey followed with 13, and Abby Reimer notched 10.For the Crusaders, Altmire led the way with 17.Notre Dame prevailed in the JV contest, 49-14.NOTRE DAMEGorman 1-2-2-4, Romich 2-0-0-4, Cabone 4-1-3-11, Farley 0-0-0-0, Altmire 7-1-2-17, Lynch 1-0-0-2, Kelly 2-0-1-4, Murphy 2-2-6-6.
