Volunteers sought for Walnutport vacancies
The Walnutport Borough Council is looking for a few good men and women to fill in the multiple vacancies on the recreation board and one on the UCC and property maintenance board.
Council Vice President Michael Gaston said, "We need to bring the recreation board back to life again."The borough first created the recreation board in the 1970s, Gaston said, but membership has dropped significantly in the past few years. What was an eight-member board is now down to two.Gaston said the borough has a playground association that handles the needs of the softball teams and playground, and a canal association that cares for the needs and activities involving the canal."We don't want to duplicate the canal and playground associations," he said. What he wants is a recreation board that will focus on additional areas of activity in the borough. For instance, Gaston said there are people who would organize a volleyball league if a volleyball pit was constructed. That could be a project the recreation board could spearhead. Likewise, maybe the board could organize a kickball or Wiffle ball league, activities for seniors or ideas for use of the pavilion, Gaston said."We just need the initiative to get life back into that board," he said.Gaston thinks the best candidates for the recreation board would be residents in their 20s and 30s. Maybe those who have children, but are not already tied to a specific sport would be able to brainstorm and revitalize recreation in the borough.Gaston said the borough had an opportunity to join a recreation board outside of the municipality, but chose not to join it."We'd like to support our own recreation group," he said. "We feel we should have our own and give them some money to plan activities."As far as the UCC and property maintenance board, that person would need to have some work experience in construction, Gaston said. There are special qualifications needed for that board and he declined to go into specifics, because the borough's greatest need is in the recreation board. If anyone would like to learn more about the recreation board or the UCC and property maintenance board, contact the borough office at
