Weissport Council wants lights repaired

Weissport Borough Council said on Monday it has some street lights that are burned-out for months and wants them repaired.

"There's a bunch of street lights out in town and on the (Bridge Street) bridge," said councilman Arland Moyer. He said some have been out for several months.It was stated that the lights are owned by PPL Electric. Council Vice President Susan Pywar said the borough must report the outages to PPL and provide pole numbers.Gene Kershner, president of the council, agreed to travel around the community and obtain information on the outages. Secretary Jillyann Sterling will then provide the information to PPL.It was noted the borough pays an electric bill each month to PPL regardless of whether the lights are working. Last month's bill totaled $214.32.In other business, it was stated that the council adopted its annual budget last week and Weissport homeowners will pay the same tax rate in 2015 as they paid in 2014.Taxes were last increased in 2011, when council raised the tax millage by 2 mills. Council set the millage at 10.9 mills.The budget lists $168,721 in total expenditures and receipts for 2015.The council agreed to continue meeting at 7 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month. However, this month, the meeting will be held on Jan. 20 instead of Jan. 19 due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.In February, the second meeting will be held on Feb. 17 because of Presidents Day.
