Shupp's putback gives NL win

With Catasauqua and Northern Lehigh both in search of their second league win, spectators expected a battle. When the final buzzer sounded, the expectations were satisfied for the Bulldogs.

David Shupp's put-back off a missed shot with three seconds left provided Northern Lehigh with the 48-46 Colonial League victory over the Rough Riders. On the Bulldogs final possession, John Taylor's three-pointer bounced off to the left of the basket, where an awaiting Shupp proved to be in the right spot at the right time for the quick lay-in.Catasauqua's Dakota Schiffer fired up a shot from beyond the three-point line, but the attempt failed allowing the locals to celebrate the big win."We knew that the defense would go to (Tyshawn) Golden, so we ran the play for Taylor," Northern Lehigh head coach Jeff Miller mentioned afterward. "Even though the shot didn't drop, it still worked out in our favor. It's nice for the kids because even through the losing streaks, they work hard and come to practice ready to go and to have it pay off is nice."The win marks the second win in as many nights for the 'Dawgs, as they defeated Moravian Academy in overtime Monday , as well, to improve to 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the league.Trailing 35-32 after three frames, the Bulldogs utilized their long distance 'network' to come out of the fourth quarter gates with a 12-2 run, which proved to be huge, and crucial to the outcome, in both coaches' eyes."That was huge because we went from being up three points to being down by seven," Catasauqua head coach Eric Snyder admitted. "We work on defending those three pointers all the time, but for some reason, we gave up those four and it hurt us."Golden began the spurt with a triple from the top of the key, and followed that with an assist to Shupp for another three-pointer 50 seconds later. Schiffer made a baseline drive to disrupt the run for the Roughies, but Nolehi immediately retaliated with back-to-back treys from Joe Egan, both off Golden assists."That was the difference tonight," Miller said. "I'd be lying if I said they were good shots, but we made them and that run was huge."For a majority of the game, the two sides were even. They traded leads consistently, as Catty took a 12-10 lead after the first quarter. Golden's eight points got the winners out to the good start, while Catty's Kevin Bond hit for six.In the second quarter, Bond and Ricky Houser hit for six apiece, as they led their team to a 26-22 halftime edge. Five different players scored for the Bulldogs. Then in the third, Golden recorded seven of his team's 10 points to cut into the lead for the 35-32 Catty edge, going into the final session.Overall, Golden led all scorers with 19 points and eight assists, while Egan dropped four three-pointers for 12 points. Meanwhile, Bond's 14 and Houser's 12 bested Wetherhold's 11 for the Rough Riders (1-10 overall, 1-6 CL).In the JV contest, Catasauqua prevailed with a 68-45 win.CATASAUQUAGraves 0-0-0-0, Wetherhold 5-0-0-11, Schiffer 3-1-2-7, Klobosits 0-0-0-0, Houser 6-0-1-12, Kober 1-0-0-2, Mason 0-0-0-0, Bond 5-4-4-14.
