Members of Pa. Legislature to be sworn in

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Members of the newly elected Pennsylvania Legislature are about to be sworn in.

The Tuesday afternoon ceremony at the state Capitol will open the two-year session two weeks before the inauguration of Democratic Gov.-elect Tom Wolf.

Among the new lawmakers begin sworn in are Jack Rader as representative for the western part of Monroe County and Mario Scavello for the new senate seat representing most of Monroe County and the upper portion of Northampton counties.

Republicans who control both the Senate and House picked up additional seats in the November election. In the House, Republicans outnumber Democrats 119 to 84 and in the Senate, 30 to 20.

House members are expected to elect Rep. Mike Turzai of Allegheny County, the current majority leader, as the new speaker. He'll replace Sam Smith, who retired.

A separate ceremony in the Supreme Court's courtroom Tuesday will mark the swearing-in of a new chief justice, Thomas Saylor. He'll succeed Chief Justice Ronald Castille, who reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 last year.
