Second quarter surge propels Palmerton to championship

Three of the five members of the 2014 Lady Indian Classic all tournament team belong to the Palmerton girls basketball team.

Madison Mummey (MVP), Jade Farquhar, and Abby Reimer showed why they were considered all-tournament worthy, combining for 57 points during Palmerton's 71-48 rout of Jim Thorpe in the championship game."Earlier I thought our 1-3-1 zone was slowing them down a little," said Jim Thorpe head coach Rob Kovac. "But (Palmerton) was able to find the middle, which we were real soft in. Once they started to expose that, the game seemed to get away from us."The Lady Bombers found the middle of the Thorpe zone during a huge 24-point second quarter. Farquhar, whom recently joined the "1,000-point club", single handedly opened up the second frame on an 8-0 spurt. The quick second quarter start seemed to set the tone for the rest of the contest."This is the epitome of a team," explained Palmerton head coach Rodney Strohl. "Everyone plays very well together and feeds off one another. Sometimes we give the ball up too much when they have an easy shot, but it's a joy to watch them at times."The unselfish sharing of the basketball is what was most impressive on the Lady Bombers' behalf. Strohl's squad displayed a ton of one-touch passing, as a majority of Palmerton's first half points were easy assisted buckets around the rim."Maddie (Mummey) and Jade (Farquhar) seem to share the same brain waves out there sometimes," Strohl half jokingly explained. "These girls see the floor so well and seem to have a feel for each other out there."One of Palmerton's challenges coming into the contest was to try and contain Jim Thorpe freshman phenom Kayley Kovac. The freshman that averages well over 20 points per game on the season was held scoreless until midway through the second quarter. Kovac ended up tied for a team-high with 15 points, but was just one for eleven from the foul line as Jim Thorpe shot just 13-31 as a team from the charity strike."We played good defense and we were very aggressive," Strohl explained. "We knew what Kovac could do; she's an outstanding freshman. We made her work all game long. We switched from man to man to zone, to try and force them to shoot from the outside."Jim Thorpe manufactured a plethora of decent looks, but the shots just wouldn't go down as the Olympians shot 38% from the floor in the losing effort."I loved the way our kids attacked their pressure defense," said the Jim Thorpe coach. "I thought the pe coach. "I thought the kids did a great job of breaking it down and had excellent opportunities to score, but we didn't."They're (Palmerton) very experienced and have been down this road. This is part of the learning process and part of the things you go through. You have to take your lumps sometimes and I think we'll be better because of it. Palmerton is a fine basketball team and we were victimized by that a little bit tonight."Alexis Naranjo was the second Thorpe player with 15 points, and had one of her stronger games of the 2014 season."She struggled early in the season and it looks like she got her confidence back," Kovac said. "If we can get that second scorer in her, it will make things a lot easier for us moving forward."As Palmerton approaches the new calendar year, the competition will start heating up."We have a lot of work ahead of us," Strohl said. "We have a ton of good teams in the Colonial League coming up, back in league play in January. My job the next couple of days is to practice and work them hard. I coach the fundamentals, and when you take the little pieces of the puzzle, the bigger picture will fall in place. There are too many good teams and great coaches in the Colonial League to not keep working hard. We know teams are gunning for us with the good record we have, we need to be ready to go every night."JIM THORPEDoughty 0-5-5-5, P. Kovac 0-0-0-0, Condly 0-1-2-1, Naranjo 6-2-5-15, Binder 2-4-8-8, K.
