Road conditions a factor in I-81 crashes

State police at the Frackville barracks said black ice and slippery road conditions were factors in five accidents that happened on Friday morning, one of which resulted in injuries to a horse.

The incidents took place between 5:50 and 6:50 a.m. on Interstate 81 in Kline and Delano townships, Schuylkill County. The first one happened at 5:50 a.m. in Kline Township, just north of the McAdoo ramp off the interstate, when a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Kimberly Cecere, 21, of Littleton, Massachusetts, was traveling north on the interstate, pulling a horse trailer. The trailer slid on black ice, causing the vehicle to swerve, at which time it struck the guardrail off the northbound shoulder. Police said the trailer then hit the railing and rolled over onto its left side. The horse had to be extricated by the McAdoo Fire Company. Assisting at the scene were Dr. Mary Lynn McBride, a veterinarian, as well as the Schuylkill County Animal Central and McAdoo and Delano fire departments.Police said the horse was transported to the Quakertown Veterinarian Hospital to be treated for lacerations it sustained in the crash.Neither the driver nor passenger Sophie Ward, 22, of Littleton, were injured.Police said three people escaped injuries in the second accident, which happened at 6 a.m. in Kline Township as well. Police said Christopher Wolfe, 19, of Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania, was driving a 2009 Toyota Camry that was northbound when it went out of control on the slick roadway. The vehicle spun clockwise and struck a bridge retaining wall along the right shoulder of the road.Wolfe and two passengers, 17-year-old Sierra Gibson, also of Fredericksburg, and an infant, were unhurt. The vehicle needed to be towed from the scene.Less than a half-hour later, at 6:24 a.m., two vehicles were involved in a minor crash. Police said a tractor-trailer driven by an unknown driver and a 2009 Dodge Caliber operated by Jennifer Fishburn, 34, of Ashland, approached the scene of a previous crash. Police said the tractor-trailer moved into the left lane, forcing the Caliber off the road, where it traveled onto the median and rolled over. Police said the rig never stopped.Fishburn was not injured.Police said a 2002 Freightliner Columbia flipped onto its side in a crash at 6:35 a.m. in Delano Township.Police said Nadeem Shahzad, 38, of South Richmond Hill, New York, was northbound when he lost control of the vehicle. After flipping over, it struck the guardrail on the east side of the road. The operator was uninjured. He will be cited for failure to drive at a safe speed. That accident was followed at 6:50 a.m. by a two-vehicle crash in Kline Township. Police said a 2013 Toyota Corolla operated by Brian R. Gitau, 35, of Alexandria, Virginia, and a 2010 Ford F-250 operated by Thomas M. Lamare, 55, of Palmyra, were northbound and approached the scene of the previous accident. Police said the Corolla failed to stop in time and crashed into the rear of the F-250.No one was hurt in the crash. The Corolla required towing from the scene.
