Fillies top Wreckers

Ask a basketball coach what kind of shot he would prefer his team to take, it's pretty much the high percentage lay up that should go in the basket more times than not.

In last night's 51-27 Marian win over Weatherly, the Fillies missed 10 first quarter shots, most of the layup variety, but as the game moved on, they greatly improved upon their accuracy with the off-the-glass baskets."We certainly tried to work the ball under the basket because we have been struggling at the perimeter lately," said Marian head coach Paul Brutto.Even with shooting 23 percent from the floor in the first period, the Fillies (7-1) managed to start the game with a 9-0 run on two baskets by Brenna Karnish and a three by Vanessa Whitecavage. Not until the 1:05 mark did Weatherly score its first bucket on a driving lay up down the lane by Shelby Berger. In the second period, the Lady Wreckers (2-5) fought back into the game with a 9-2 run of their own. Kelly Parker sparked the comeback and with 4:20 to go, her short jumper brought Weatherly to within a basket at 11-9. But Marian took control again to close out the half by outscoring the Wreckers 13-4. Abbey Walden sparked the attack scoring six points while Madison Stoyer added a lay up and three free throws to push Marian's advantage to double digits at the break."We play like we are on a rollercoaster," said Weatherly mentor Kevin Kringe. "We put ourselves in tough situations, but then we are resilient and fight back. The problem is we can't seem to find any level of consistency."The third quarter was pretty much all Marian as the Fillies beat full court pressure and put in lay up after lay up. Karnish scored nine of her game-high 13 points while Lexi Hartz' s put back at 2:50 finished her period's tally of six points to pace the Wreckers."Our pressure defense broke down and we went into a chase mode," said Kringe. "They spread us out and found the open girl underneath."'We ran the floor better in the second half," said Brutto. "Weatherly is a scrappy team and they play hard no matter what the score."The fourth period proved to be more of the same. Marian, who placed nine players in the scoring column, received some added punch off the bench from Jasmine Mooney who pitched in with four points. Parker, who led the Wreckers with 10 points, hit a long three and a running one hander. Both coaches see much room for improvement."Right now we are not good at making adjustments on the fly," said Kringe. "We are missing good screens we set up because our eyes are down looking at the dribble. We could use more numbers on the roster too to improve our depth.""We have too many mental lapses on defense," said Brutto. "Our transition defense needs to improve. Much of our problem is that we have six girls who are out with injuries. Tonight we had to play six - minute JV quarters as they did too because of a lack of numbers. I don't know if we can even play a JV game against Berwick coming up. We need the backups on varsity.'Marian won the shortened JV game, 41-9.MARIANWhilden 3-1-2-8, Whitecavage 2-1-2-6, Correale 2-0-0-4, Shaud 1-2-7-4, Agosti 1-0-0-2, Mahon 0-0-0-0, Capparell 1-1-2-3, Stoyer 2-3-3-7, Mooney 2-0-0-4, Karnish 5-3-4-13.
