Easton Hospital settles on healthcare fraud charges

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia, has announced the Easton Hospital has agreed to pay a $662,000 settlement regarding health care fraud allegations.

It is alleged the hospital billed Medicare for medical procedures that were not performed, were partially completed and were medically unnecessary. The claim alleges urologist Dr. Thomas Walden, who is no longer affiliated with the hospital, is the center of the improprieties, although the hospital, in a prepared statement, denied the allegations."Easton Hospital has a robust compliance program and is committed to providing our patients with quality care," hospital spokesman Stephen Wilson said. "As part of our compliance program, we voluntarily repaid certain Medicare claims prior to the government's investigation."The matter surfaced when two former hospital employees, David Kasprzak and David Heaton, told the government they observed urological procedures and tests performed by Walden for which the government should not have been billed by the hospital. They filed whistleblower complaints under the federal False Claims Act, according to the release, and will receive an unspecified share of the hospital's payment.
