Three quick goals unofficial AHL record
Talk about a tale of two games. Last Wednesday, the Phantoms came out hotter than anybody would have ever thought possible and set an unofficial AHL record for the three quickest goals by one team, putting the puck in the net three times in a span of :21 in a 5-3 win over Binghamton, with all of the goals coming in the first :36 of the game. Two nights later, the Phantoms managed just one shot on goal in the entire first period, but still picked up a 2-0 win over Hershey.
The AHL record is termed unofficial, since the only record that the league has on the fastest that three goals have been scored in one game is by two teams, when the Springfield Falcons scored twice and the Worcester IceCats scored once in the span of :20 on December 14, 1997. It's also believed to be the fastest that three goals were ever scored - especially by one team - to start a game, but that record isn't kept either."I don't think any of us expected anything like that, especially because we haven't been scoring too many goals lately. Just :21 or whatever it was, I don't think I'll ever see anything like that again. It was a shock to the system," said Andrew Gordon, who put the third goal in the net. "We scored the first one and I thought 'all right, good job.' Then, we scored two and I looked and there was only :30 gone, so my first shift was only :10 or something. We had two goals and it seemed like we hadn't done anything yet."The scoring spree was started by Petr Straka, who scored just :15 into the game. Jason Akeson scored :12 later and Gordon capped the spree when he put a weak shot toward the net that sailed past goalie Andrew Hammond at the :36 mark of the first period. Hammond was pulled from the game following Gordon's goal. The downside for the Phantoms was that the rest of the game, the team didn't mount too many threats. The Senators cut the lead to 4-2 at 2:33 of the third period on a goal by Chris Wideman. Nick Cousins seemingly put the game away about 13-minutes later when he picked up a power play goal. Cousins had two goals on the night, both on power plays and Binghamton picked up three power play goals, which left a bad taste in defenseman Brandon Manning's mouth."We cashed in on the power-play and it ends up being the game winner. For Cousins to step up I think is big for his confidence. We need to find some secondary scoring and we gave up 43 shots or something and that's too many and they had two power-play goals and in any other game, that's the difference in the hockey game," said Manning.Against Hershey, the Bears held the Phantoms to just one shot in the first period and just 18 shots on the night, but goalie Anthony Stolarz made 32 saves to turn in the shutout for the Phantoms. Akeson scored twice for the Phantoms to give them the two-goal edge and give himself three goals in two games.PHANTOM FACTS: The Phantoms have 10 home wins this season and have been outshot in seven of them.
