Bombers pull away from PV

Rodney Strohl had seen it before.

After watching his Palmerton girls' basketball team start slow against Saucon Valley just days earlier, Strohl saw the Lady Bombers suffer the same fate during Saturday's game against Pleasant Valley.Just like Thursday, however, Strohl witnessed yet another spirited Palmerton comeback, as the Lady Bombers erased an early deficit to claim an impressive 53-33 non-league win over the Lady Bears to stay undefeated."I don't know. We started like that against Saucon Valley as well," he said of that eventual 60-51 win. "They (Pleasant Valley) started out shooting real well, and playing a team that we haven't seen in a couple of years may have also had something to do with it."While Palmerton (6-0, 4-0) has been able to rely on superior guard play throughout much of the season, the Lady Bombers seemed to struggle with Pleasant Valley's size, something Strohl acknowledged afterward."We had to make adjustments going against a bigger lineup, especially inside, so we tried to work hard on that," he noted. "That's the first time this year that we've really seen dominant inside players. I think our guards can matchup with anyone in the league defensively. But we had to work hard on the inside."They were able to get the ball inside early, but once we got into a rhythm we were able to put a lot of pressure on them and maybe tire them out in the second quarter when we had a nice little run. We just keep going at it."After trailing 11-10 following the first quarter, the Lady Bombers were able to take control of the game by outscoring the Lady Bears 18-3 in the second frame. The highlight came right before the first half ended when Jade Farquhar buried a three-pointer as time expired for her 1,000th career point to give Palmerton a commanding 28-14 lead at the break.Farquhar, who scored only two points in the first quarter, accumulated nine of her game-high 18 in the second.Coming in only 10 points shy of the milestone, the talented senior confessed she knew where she stood prior to the game but that she didn't let it affect her preparation."People talk about it; I got like 80 questions before the game about it," she said. "But once it's game time, I just let it slide off me and I was just excited to play and try to get another win."Farquhar wasn't the only standout on offense, as the Lady Bombers placed three in double figures, with Madison Mummey contributing 13 points and Abby Reimer chipping in 11.Pleasant Valley (2-3, 1-2) cut Palmerton's lead to nine at 35-26 in the third quarter as the Lady Bears once again established a presence inside with Jenesa Fields scoring six points and Renee Milos adding four. But the rally was short lived, as Palmerton closed the game on an 18-7 run to pull away."We were 14-for-54 from the floor and I don't think that helps at all," said PV head coach Nadia Gauronsky. "I think the game would have been different if we had made some of those shots."But you're dealing with a lot of youth and you have three freshmen playing the bulk of your minutes. I feel like if we could start to learn how to play together, we'll be okay."Milos and Fields each scored eight points for the Lady Bears.PLEASANT VY.Covart 2-1-2-5, Miller 0-0-0-0, Francis 1-0-2-2, Kiefer 0-0-0-0, Borden 0-0-0-0, Russell 3-1-2-7, Bengle 0-0-0-0, Fields 4-0-0-8, Salmon 0-0-0-0, Milos 4-0-0-8, Benjamin 1-0-0-3.
