Tamaqua man facing charges

A Tamaqua man has been cited by Coaldale police after he was caught running around on the roof of an apartment building at 127 E. Phillips St.

Police were dispatched to the property shortly after noon and found John Leroy Smith II on the roof. A rope was hanging from a pipe on the west side of the building.Smith said he climbed the rope to the roof, just to see if he could do it to gain entry. He was holding a tan colored bag and had an ax in his hand. Smith placed the ax on the roof when officers arrived. When told to come down off the roof, Smith began pacing back and forth in an agitated manner. At one point he started to climb onto a porch roof on the east side of the building. As officers attempted to help him get down, he suddenly ran to the west side, threw the tan bag into a neighboring yard. He then slid partially down the rope, jumped onto a driveway and fled.He was apprehended a short time later. The tan bag landed on its side, spilling some of the contents, including various paraphernalia items commonly used to do drugs.Smith was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass and criminal mischief. On Oct. 28, Smith returned to the building, which he had been warned to avoid. The landlord called police at 7:40 p.m. to have him removed. He was found hiding in the bedroom closet in the apartment of Taryn Depos, removed from the building and cited for criminal trespass.
