Possible new No. 1 PA buck to be scored by PGC
What may be the new No. 1 buck ever taken in Pennsylvania will be scored Tuesday, Dec. 16, beginning at 9 a.m., and Pennsylvania Game Commission headquarters, 2001 Elmerton Ave., Harrisburg, and streamed live on the agency's website at
www.pgc.state.pa.us.Jeff Lenzi of Allegheny County shot the massive 10-point buck near his home, Friday, Oct. 10, during the statewide archery season. PGC personnel will conduct the scoring session using Pope and Young guidelines.Pennsylvania launched its Big Game Records Program in 1965, and today, records are kept of all official measurements recorded for whitetail deer, black bears and elk that meet minimum qualifications for entry into Pennsylvania's records book.Records are split into a number of categories, based on things such as the configuration of a deer's or elk's rack, and whether the animal was taken with a firearm or archery gear.It appears likely that Lenzi's buck will be scored in the typical category, meaning its rack does not have many abnormal points.Unofficial measurements taken on the rack indicate it may be the largest overall ever taken in Pennsylvania, including those by firearms.********With the approaching Pennsylvania flintlock muzzleloader deer season, Cabela's Hamburg has partnered with the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association for Muzzleloader Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 20 and 21.This year's Pennsylvania flintlock season opens Friday, Dec. 26, and continues through Saturday, Jan. 10, and this event is timed to help hunters gear up and get advice for this traditional season.NMLRA Longhunter Society chairman and outdoors writer and author Dave Ehrig and other NMLRA and Pennsylvania Federation of Black Powder Shooters members will be available to answer questions and provide advice both days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.Ehrig has written numerous newspaper and magazine articles on muzzleloader hunting, and his book "Muzzleloader Hunting For Deer and Turkey" has won numerous awards and is considered the best on the subject.Since he began hunting with muzzleloaders more than 40 years ago he has taken more than 100 deer, as well as caribou and black bear, with a flintlock rifle. In addition to the flintlock events, a Sporting Clays 101 seminar will be presented each day at noon by the shooting staff Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays. There will be information for both the novice and seasoned shooter and representatives from LVSC will have an information table in the shooting department both days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to answer questions.Sporting clays is one of the safest and growing sports in the United States today because of its appeal as a family activity.
