Second half surge lifts Indians

After a sluggish first half, Lehighton coach Rich Oertner dailed up the correct formula during intermission.

The result was a big win for his Indians.Lehighton trailed Marian 19-16 at half, but took the second half by storm en route to a 57-35 non-league victory. The first half was sloppy basketball, as both teams shot poorly from the field and combined for a total of 21 turnovers.Although it wasn't pretty, Marian stuck to the game plan and held a slim three-point advantage heading into the locker room."We came out in a "diamond-and-one" and tried to focus on defending (Jordan) Knappenberger," explained Marian head coach John Patton. "They missed some shots, turned the ball over, but then we just got stalled offensively heading into halftime"They're so talented and have so many people who can score that we had to try and make it a slower game. It worked out as they only scored 16 in the first half. Their pressure turns you over and the transition points in the second half hurt us."Tyler Williams kept Lehighton in the game during the first half, recording six points and eight rebounds during the first two quarters. Williams finished with seven points and 10 boards."That kid would run though a wall if you asked him too," said Lehighton head coach Rich Oertner of his starting power forward. "He's only 5-10 but he plays really hard inside. I can never get mad at that kid because he always hustles."The Indians played a near perfect third quarter. Lehighton opened up the period on an 11-1 run, didn't commit a single turnover and forced 10 Colt turnovers. Tom Ruzicka and Tanner Zwetolitz both had a huge triples during the spurt. Tyler Crum came alive with 12 second-half points."We made a few adjustments at halftime. We had two or three that we talked about and whichever one worked the best we would go with," explained Oertner. "We did the same thing against Palmerton we went through a few defenses before we found one that worked."Williams said, "We pressured their guards and were able to force some turnovers. We took our time in the half court and were able to find open shots for guys like Ruzicka and Zwetolitz."The Lehighton pressure was simply too much to handle in the second half for the Colts, who committed a total of 29 turnovers during the game."When Lehighton turned us over and took a lead, we were forced to play man-to-man defense," Patton said. "They (Lehighton) run the press so well that we turned the ball over and gave up easy baskets. It's a learning process for us and I think we did some positive things."It's one game at a time. We have to learn who we are, and we've had some positive spurts with some good things. We need to put more of them together in a 32-minute game."Oertner said, "Once we created some turnovers, there's no thought process; it's run down the floor and pass the ball to the first open guy."Toward the end it seemed like the adrenaline was working better for us the more that we pushed the ball. We're definitely getting in better shape as the season goes on, we need to work and get better every day."LEHIGHTONMcDowell 0-2-4-2, Ruzicka 3-1-2-9, Crum 6-6-7-19, Zwetolitz 2-0-0-6, Williams 3-1-2-7, Manogue 1-0-0-3, Chambers 3-2-4-8, Knappenberger 0-3-5-3.
