No tax increase in Mahoning Township for 2015

Mahoning Township residents will not see an increase in their 2015 taxes.

Last week, the board of supervisors on a 4-0 vote to adopt the 2015 budget in the amount of $2,392,147, which lets the millage remain the same as last year. Chairman John Wieczorek and Supervisors Shawn Haggerty, Bruce Steigerwalt and Franklin Ruch voted in favor of the adoption; while Supervisor Kerry Verrastro was absent. Some minor adjustments in individual line items were made to the 2014 budget for next year, but for the most part the budget remains close to last year's budget. There was no change to the various millages. The township millage is set at 5.25 mills for 2015 with 4 mills directed to the general fund, 0.5 mill for roads and machinery, 0.5 mill for fire company and 0.25 mill for the building and land fund.In other business, the board also approved two letters of credit for 2015 for the Summit Ridge and Sage Meadow subdivisions on a pair of 4-0 votes. Both are developments owned by Bill Grant and required renewal by the end of the year.Over the past month, Wieczorek, township engineer Peter Eisenbrown and solicitor Tom Nanovic met with Grant to discuss how to alter the Summit Ridge development into phases to reduce the amount of the credit needed for the project until the proposed second phase would begin.Once the phasing alteration is complete, the credit amount would be reduced to match the first phase, and when the second phase would begin it will be changed to match that phase. With the understanding this will take place in the future, supervisors agreed to adopt the $1.5 million dollar letter of credit for Summit Ridge. They also accepted the $182,880 letter of credit for Sage Meadows. Both projects have been in development since 2006 and 2007 respectively.
