Fillies place four on team

Marian Catholic's remarkable season recently got even better when the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association announced its 2014 all-state teams for the Class A, AA and AAA levels.

After capturing Schuylkill League and District 11 titles and advancing to the PIAA state final against Greensburg Central Catholic, the Fillies were honored with four selections on the Class A squad. Two seniors (Abby O'Donnell and Emily Pilla) and two juniors (Abby Stankiewitch and Maureen Kloap) were recognized by the PVCA for their contributions during the Fillies' 25-1 season.Pilla finished her incredible career at Marian near the top of most statistical categories, recording an astonishing 576 kills (11th all-time), 731 digs (ninth all-time), 285 aces and 147 assists, both third all-time.This past season she was especially dominant, notching 249 digs, 216 kills, 55 assists and a team-leading 92 aces.O'Donnell completed her record-setting career with yet another stellar season, amassing a staggering 811 assists to go along with 191 digs, 63 aces and 61 kills. The solid play, both this year and over the past four seasons, was not lost on Marian head coach John Fallabel."When I think of Abby and Emily, I think of two of the best players in the program's history," he said. "They both had remarkable careers, and what they've done on the court is only a fraction of what they've meant to the team. They were both great leaders off the court and set a positive example for the younger girls to follow."Stankiewitch firmly established herself as one of the Fillies' top players after her junior season, finishing with a team-leading 262 kills. She has 587 career kills, which ranks 10th in school history.Knowing he has the talented middle hitter for one more season is something Fallabel is looking forward to."Abigail has grown over the last two years to be the top hitter on the team," noted Fallabel. "She's surrounded by a lot of great players. But next year, when it's time for her to take over, she'll be ready."Fallabel will have the luxury of pairing Stankiewitch with Kloap, who showed the ability to attack and play outstanding defense throughout the season.Kloap continued to show tremendous growth in her second year as a starter at outside hitter, compiling 248 digs, 203 kills and 45 aces. For her career, Kloap has 405 digs, 384 kills and 105 aces. With another year of experience under her belt, Fallabel will be looking for even more from Kloap next fall."Mo (Maureen) had another great year," said Fallabel, "but the best thing about her is that excels in big games. In the last two state championship games, she was our No. 1 hitter. There's something to be said for that."Despite coming up just short of their second consecutive state title, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Fillies make another run at the crown next season with such a talented core returning.
