Indian matmen look to shine this season

Lehighton head wrestling Coach Danny Williams has mainly had a very young group of wrestlers during his now five-year tenure with the program.

Although the program has lost senior Anthony Farano who finished top -six in the district, don't be deceived by the Indians' 11-12 overall record from last season.Farano was the only Indian the program has graduated over the previous two seasons and it appears that this once-upon-a-time young group of athletes is ready to turn the corner and take the program to the next level."They've taken their lumps over the last two years being so young," explained Williams. "Now, a majority of our team are juniors and seniors with a ton of varsity experience. Having a complete team from top to bottom is an important part of this year's team."Josh Gornick (145) and Dominik Mystkowski (170) will bring their senior leadership to the table this season to try and propel the Indians to the post season.Zach Kemmerer, Dustin Koons, Tyler Cann, and Wyatt Clements are the host of junior wrestlers who will make a positive impact for the Indians this year, and who have a wealth of experience on the matt. The talented class of juniors also includes Connor Frey at 182/195. Frey owned a record of 35-10 last yearplacing third in districts, fourth in regional action, and was a PIAA State Qualifier.Williams, said, "Our team as a whole is really looking forward to this year. The hard work that our guys have been putting in thus far shows their dedication toward having one of the best seasons we've seen around here in a few years. Many of our wrestlers are excited for the opportunity to compete for an individual league title as well."Nate Kemmerer (106), Antonio Lorenzo (113), and Cody Scherer (132) are some younger talent expected to contribute for the Indians during their first year in the Schuylkill League. The Lehighton coach seems excited and optimistic about the opportunity to now compete in the new league."We've wrestled many of the teams within the league during dual meet tournaments over the past few years and have had individual match-ups within individual tournaments," explained Williams."I'm excited to join this league, because I've seen it grow into one of the most competitive leagues in the area for our sport. You always have tough teams like North Schuylkill, Tri-Valley and Blue Mountain coming out of that league and we look forward to competing against them throughout the year. We're definitely looking forward to competing within the Schuylkill League this year."The ceiling and potential seems to be extremely high for Williams and his Indians. The Lehighton coach owns a dual meet record of 36-53 during his time with mostly young talent. With a strong nucleus of talent returning, there's a strong possibility that the winning ways for this program are right around the corner and a chance to do some damage during its first year in the Schuylkill League doesn't seem out of the question.
