Should stores be open on Thanksgiving?

We asked people on Facebook if they thought stores should be open on Thanksgiving. Here's what they said:

Lysa Gallardo Grant I know I am in the minority here, but as a veterinary worker, we had to work on holidays and the trade-off was, you got paid extra and your family would celebrate on another day. The days of traditions are changing. Thanksgiving is just a day, not even a specific day as it changes so no reason to celebrate on that day! Think of the military, zoos, gas stations, restaurants etc. They have to work, so why shouldn't retail workers? Many families have created traditions around shopping. I like shopping with my family and having a day off to do so is fun.Desiree Palazzo Kelly I don't shop on holidays, and very rarely on Sunday. I think it's important to have family days. Days where you can just enjoy the simple things.Mysty Leigh Nelson I think people should do what they deem appropriate and leave the people alone who choose to shop. Pick your battles. If it's not your choice, don't go shopping. If it is, carry on.Jared Hoffman I don't see the problem with working. Some people can't have off. Police, fire, ambulance, hospitals, and towing facilities are just a few. I would say gas stations as well, because most people want to travel on holidays so they're going to need gas to get there. So what's the difference if stores are open?Bill Eade Not at all. There's no reason for ANY store to be open on Thanksgiving, including 7-11s and the like. If people can't plan ahead and have a full tank of gas in their vehicle before the ONE day things are closed, then let them run out of gas. People are too used to all the luxuries these days and can't think or plan ahead anymore.Brad Horvath Only if they are selling turkey ya know in case I burn mine.Jenni Peiffer I wouldn't be open if I owned a store. But I appreciate that Americans still have the freedom to do as they wish.Deb DeLong No, but then again they would not be open if people did not go. So, people, stay home this Thanksgiving.Michele Garis Bonser No, they shouldn't. The holidays should be spent with family, not in stores fighting for gifts.Sharon Shannon Some people can't be with family or don't have family to be with, so they might rather work and make extra money instead of sitting home alone.Berni Vachon No I don't. They should allow their employees to spend the holidays with their families. I worked in retail and had to work on Thanksgiving. It's not right that the people in the corporate offices can have off but not the ones that keep their stores running.Eva Kumor Zakrzewski Yes if they choose to be open why not? Gas stations, police stations, hospitals, convenience stores, the military, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. are all open for everyone's convenience so if other stores want to be open they have the right to be. For those disagreeing, it's absolutely your choice not to shop. This is the beauty of our free country. I personally have forgotten things on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day and was grateful I was able to run out and get those items. Not everyone celebrates certain holidays so some people don't mind working and need the money.Sharlene Bittner Why have holidays if families can't be home together to celebrate them.Jason Merkel There are a lot more jobs besides retail or health care that have to work Thanksgiving and Xmas like industrial facilities and other places. On holidays you make time with your family on the hours you're not working. Why is it always the poor retail people?Nancy Lee Hoover No. Everyone should get to enjoy the holiday with their loved ones. Money is only paper. Loved ones are what is important.Lori Washburn I have been working holidays including Christmas Day for the past 28 years. Yes, I work in health care in a clerical position but I enjoy and cherish my holidays the same as those that do not have to work them. I would much rather be at home with my family too. You learn to adapt. Most people do not work 24 hours a day so you do have some time to enjoy your holiday either before or after work. You can also have family dinners and get-togethers on other days, not just because it is a holiday.Holly Koch Shopping is not necessary on Thanksgiving, sorry people. I agree with if you have a chosen career in health care, police officers, airport security worker etc. what keeps the country going 24/7 this is different. I remember years ago stores were closed on Sundays so families spent the day together, had a dinner together, went for Sunday rides. Family values fell apart and then they wonder why.Roxi J Smale Yes and no. Most people have to work on the holidays. I would give people the chance to make some money then be able to go home to their family. Holiday pay is nice, and especially for those that money is tight.Doreen Briese I worked many, many Thanksgivings, my Mom had a lovely Thanksgiving meal for when I could get home, that's family, that's what Thanksgiving is all about, it's not about the specific numerical day on the calendar. It's when you can gather your loved ones together to enjoy a meal and give thanks for what you have.Lori Parry Back in a day the only stores open were stores like 7-11. If you needed something quick that is where you went. People should be ashamed of themselves spending their holiday fighting over the cheapest iPad or TV. All about greed.Carolyn Palmer No, stores should not be open on Thanksgiving, this is a day for family, not shopping. In today's world there is not enough family time.Debbie Reisenweaver Schweitzer Can't compare necessary work like health care, police, fire to retail shopping, which is not necessary. It's just more greed and consumerism replacing a traditional holiday. Soon stores will be opening Christmas so all the greedy folks can return the crap they didn't like.
