Elderly Carbon woman struck by car, killed

An elderly Carbon County woman was struck by a car and killed Monday evening in Franklin Township.

Township police identified the victim as Agnes Szpak, 89, of Nesquehoning.Police said Szpak got out of her car about 6:30 p.m. while parked along the shoulder of the northbound lanes of Route 209 and attempted to cross the northbound lanes, which she did successfully.However, she was struck while crossing the southbound lanes by a vehicle operated by Nicole Iannone, 22, of Kunkletown, who was southbound on 209.Szpak was flown by Pennstar helicopter to St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill, where she was pronounced dead.The investigation is continuing and charges are pending, police noted.
