Blue Mountain has its earliest opening ever

Record-breaking low temperatures has Blue Mountain Ski Resort in Palmerton primed to hold its earliest opening weekend in its 38-year history.

Blue Mountain's opening weekend for the 2014-15 winter season will take place Saturday and Sunday, with 10 trails and four lifts that will operate from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.With the help of the abnormally early cold temperatures, combined with Blue Mountain's status as the region's leader in snowmaking, 10 trails are expected to be open with a 24-inch base. That will result in a record for the most trails ready for opening weekend, according to owner Barbara Green."It's exciting; it's a testimony to all the investing we've done in the snowmaking," Green said. "We're opening up with the most runs."Green said Blue Mountain capitalized on the ideal snowmaking environment as it began to make snow last Thursday evening with one of the East Coast's most powerful and advanced snowmaking systems."In seven days, we can open up from no snow on the ground to having two feet on the ground on average over a third of the resort; I think that's pretty amazing," she said. "All the new technology that we've invested in and the automation that we've invested in is paying off."Blue Mountain continued to invest in their snowmaking capacity this summer by adding six new snowmaking pumps, and increasing their output to an impressive 14,000 gallons per minute. As a result, over half of Blue Mountain's acreage is now fully automated with the industry's latest equipment and software, along with the entire water pumping system. In honor of the earliest opening weekend in its history, Blue Mountain will offer two types of lift tickets this weekend only.Guests can purchase the "early opening" six-hour EZ Slope Pass for $40, and a $35 night ticket, available from 4-10 p.m.Additionally, those with 2014-2015 weekday season passes will be granted lift access, and be invited to ski and ride all opening weekend. Guests can check the Trail Map & Condition Report at Skibluemt.com for updates and the official trail count on Saturday morning. However, Blue Mountain will be closed Monday through next Thursday, but will reopen for the remainder of the season Nov. 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. weather permitting.Last year, Blue Mountain opened the day after Thanksgiving. For more information, visit
