Three Lehighton graduates will be part of this year's NCAA Final Four field hockey championships.

Echo Bretz and Jordyn Homyak, teammates at the University at Albany, and Abby Frey, who plays for North Carolina, will be competing for the Division 1 title this weekend in Maryland.Albany, which upset Maryland to reach the Final Four, will be facing Connecticut in one national semifinal on Friday. North Carolina, the top-seeded team in all of D1, takes on Syracuse in the other semi.All three former Indians are key contributors to their respective schools and were members of the Lehighton team that captured the PIAA state championship in 2009.Bretz and Homyak, both seniors, helped the Great Danes post a record of 20-2 so far this season. The team, ranked No. 12 in the nation, captured the America East Conference championship and knocked off Wake Forest 2-1 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Albany then registered its upset over Maryland to reach the Final Four.Bretz contributed to the win over Maryland by scoring the team's first goal on a penalty corner rebound. For the year, the forward has played in all 22 games (having started six of them). She has scored six goals and registered four assists for 16 points sixth most on the team. The business administration major, who received America East Rookie honors in her freshman year, has 16 career goals.Homyak, meanwhile, excels at the opposite end of the field. The former all-stater in high school has started every game Albany has played since arriving as a freshman a total of 84. This year, the sociology and criminal justice major has recorded five defensive saves and also has an assist.Homyak received America East Rookie Team honors her freshman year and was named All-Conference Second Team as a junior. She's also an NFHCA All-Academic Squad selection.If Albany can continue its run with a victory over No. 3 UConn, there's a chance the former Lehighton players will face Frey's Tar Heels for the championship.Frey, a redshirt senior, has started all 22 games on defense for Carolina. The exercise and sport science major is the team's vice-captain this season. She has two defensive saves and an assist in 2014. Frey earned a spot on the ACC Academic Honor Roll and has been a recipient of the team's Iron Ram award (which measures relative stength) the past three years.North Carolina's game against Syracuse starts at 2 p.m. Friday while Albany is scheduled to begin its contest at 4:45 p.m.The final will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.Also a member of the Tar Heels squad is Jess Pereira, a redshirt freshman. Pereira has played in seven games this season.
