Complaints voiced over man at Lehigh Canal

A homeless man is living in a vehicle along the Lehigh Canal in the Weissport area, residents told Weissport Borough Council on Monday.

Woodrow and Joanne Nace of Lehighton told council the person at the canal urinates in front of passers-by and keeps his personal items in a shed where equipment is stored for the Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission. The Naces said the man does some work for the canal commission and has a key for the chain access to the canal as well as the storage shed."He's been chasing people away from the canal," Joanne Nace said. "He's living on the tow path."She said he has a pickup, which is often filled with "junk." She also has seen him driving the truck on the tow path and "I saw people on the back of the truck."Nace said at one time her daughter was looking for an apartment and stayed for two days along the tow path, then was chased by the police. She asked why this person is permitted to continue living there.Council President Gene Kershner said the information will be passed on to the canal commission, although the commission doesn't meet until spring."Someone needs to get on this," council member Sue Pywar said.
