The skating park in Lansford, built for skateboard enthusiasts and located near the borough swimming pool, is being ruined by vandals.

Lansford Borough Council was told Wednesday night by councilman Joe Butrie that a bicycle rack has been ripped out of the ground. Council member Rosemary Cannon said a bench also was ruined.Butrie suggested dismantling the park for the winter, and then moving it closer to the street in spring.The council said it will keep the park intact and then move the equipment toward the street in spring since it has no place for storage.Cannon said the police department will be advised of the damage.Lansford is one of the few communities in the area with a skate park. It was constructed after youths appealed to the council for such a facility where they can safely ride their skateboards.Cannon said a swing at a playground also was damaged.She said someone got stuck in the swing and was freed by other people who cut the seat.Cannon said the swing has size limits and the person who got stuck was apparently too large for it.She said insurance won't cover the loss.In other business:• An inspection by Seitz Brothers indicates there are two areas of mold spores in the rear of the police department.Council said it will ask Seitz for recommendations on what to do about the problem.• Council will look into bulk purchasing from Boyer's Supermarket, a local business, for such items as paper towels.• Greg Yasson was appointed as an alternate to the Unified Construction Code appeals board. Council member Samantha Yasson abstained from voting.• Council said it was assured in a letter that work is on schedule for construction of an Americans With Disabilities Act ramp at the front of the borough hall. Presently demolition of existing steps and a porch is occurring.Council President Martin Ditsky said the work started Oct. 20 and must be completed by Feb. 17, 2015. The work is being done by Bruce George Paving.
