Veterans honored

Tamaqua Masonic Lodge 238, Free and Accepted Masons, will honor all military veterans from the greater Tamaqua area on Nov. 19 at the Masonic Lodge, Route 54 and Shawn Avenue in Hometown. Festivities will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will include a brief ceremony and the presentation of pins to individual veterans. Refreshments will be served.Reservations are strongly recommended to ensure there are enough pins and refreshments and may be made by calling 570-668-4532 or 570-668-5311.All veterans, families and friends are welcome.Garden ClubThe Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its annual banquet on Oct. 28 at the Normal Square Inn, with 22 people attending. Speakers for the evening included Sue Bonner and Cindy Miller of Summershanty Fiber Arts. Their business is on the second floor of the M&S Hardware store.Their topics included knitting and felted knit. They provided samples and announced the start of classes.The next meeting will be held Tuesday. The program will be "holiday decorations."Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Nov. 6 with 57 members attending. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session.Jacque Patrick provided an inspirational reading, "Don't Quit." Bob Betz was added to the sick list and Joan Deitrich, Jacque Patrick and Mike Reigel were welcomed back to the group.Upcoming events include a Chinese auction for Thursday; a visit from state Sen. David Argall on Nov. 20; and annual Christmas party on Dec. 11.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the Masonic Lodge on Route 54 (East) in Hometown. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The lodge is handicap accessible.Zion LewistownPastor Jim Williams will officiate at this Sunday's service in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.Bible study classes are held at 12:30 p.m. Thursdays. Also on Thursdays, the Confirmation class meets at 6:30 p.m.Calvary EvangelicalThe Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes are held at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse will be collected and dedicated during the service and a Thanksgiving hymn singalong will be held at 6:30 p.m.A time of praise and prayer will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at the home of Carl and Marge Heisler.Upcoming events include old-fashioned harvest and thanksgiving service at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 23; Bishop Peggy Johnson visits on Nov. 30.
