Fillies reach final
DALLAS - There's a sports quote out there that many coaches use to motivate their players. The quote is "hard work beats talent when talent won't work hard." Meaning, even if a team isn't the most talented team out there, they can still be successful if they put in the extra work.
Now, that quote pertains to teams that are usually decently talented, but need to work harder than everyone else to maintain success. The 2014 Marian Fillies volleyball team may force some quote writers to come up with a new sports cliche. It's evident that the Fillies have both the drive to work harder than anyone else and the talent, as it showed once again on Tuesday. Marian cruised to a three game sweep over District 4 Champion Troy, winning 25-13, 25-14, and 25-11.With the win, the Fillies (25-0) qualified for their second consecutive PIAA A Volleyball Championship game where they will be vying to bring home the trophy for a second straight season. They will face Greensburg Central Catholic on Saturday at Richland High School in Johnstown, PA at 11 a.m.Coach John "Doc" Fallabel was obviously emotional after the game and emphatically stated the importance of the Fillies senior class."The truth of the matter is I only get to be with these girls for four more days," said Fallabel. "It's been eight years since these girls and I have started working together and they're just great girls. From 2007-2011 we didn't advance out of districts, so I had some time on my hands. These girls came in as fifth graders and now look where we are. Obviously I've had some phenomenal girls come in and join them, but this is a group I will really miss."Fallabel saved his emotion for after the game, while his players showcased their emotion on the court. That specific emotion was intensity and every one of the Fillies' players kept their foot on the gas pedal throughout the match. It was obvious from the first set, the Fillies were focused and balanced.Four different Fillies came up with kills in the first period with Senior Emily Pilla leading the way with six. Marian jumped out to an 18-8 lead and controlled the momentum. An intense start is literally what the doctor ordered."We knew we had to be more intense tonight," said junior Maureen Kloap. "We knew there was a lot of pressure on us to perform well, so we all had to be at the top of our game. I think we all came into this game determined to show people how hard we've worked to get here."In the second frame, Troy made things a little interesting early thanks to senior captain Kelsey Bristol. Bristol's four kills and her quick play on the court kept the Trojans close as they knotted the score up 11-11 mid-way through the set. Troy actually took a 12-11 lead after a Bristol boom, which was the only time the Trojans would lead on the night. After that, you could see the attitude of the Fillies' players shift. They never got frazzled, banded together, and went on a 13-2 run to capture the second game."We're a family and we always have each other's back," said senior Lauren Nietz. "If something goes wrong or someone makes a mistake we pick each other up. That's what a family does. We know when we have to pick each other up. We've also been here before and we know what it takes to advance. Last season, we gained so much postseason experience and it's been a huge confidence booster for us during this postseason."Troy looked exhausted in the third set and after Bristol injured in her thumb late in the second game, the Trojans weren't the same. The Fillies got out to an 18-3 lead and never looked back. It was a complete performance from Marian who is playing its best volleyball headed into the state championship game on Saturday."We have to be ready to play a really good opponent on Saturday," said Fallabel. "There is some strong volleyball programs in the western part of the state and both the teams in the other semi-final are very good. We're going to get right back to work on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and continue to work hard."For the Trojans, Bristol led the way with nine kills and 13 digs. For Marian, middle hitter Abby Stankiewitch continued her consistent efforts this season, leading the way with 12 kills. Kloap added 10 kills, while Pilla finished with eight. Abby O'Donnell did her part once again, adding 32 assists.
