Chalk Walks a big success at Pleasant Valley

We've all heard about Happy Meals. But have you ever heard of Happy Walks?

That's what Pleasant Valley Middle School students saw as they arrived for school Wednesday morning. All the sidewalks, front, back and sides, at the school had been chalked with smiley faces, rainbows, hearts and a multitude of positive quotes.Eighth-grade student Skyler Jennings, 13, of Saylorsburg, noticed a lot of her classmates seemed depressed, many walking around with their heads down. Active in basketball, softball and yearbook, Skyler felt a need to try to do something to inspire her classmates. She asked her principal, Rocco Seiler, if they could do some kind of positive message project. Last year, to greet all the students on the first day of school, there was a Post-it note stuck on every student's locker with a positive message. Skyler said she wanted to do something bigger and better. She presented a diagram with positive, happy messages on the sidewalks. Seiler, assistant principal Josephine Fields and Kris Meckes, PVMS dean of students and assistant athletic director loved the idea and put their heads together and came up with Chalk Walks.Fields contacted Walmart and Target, which generously donated the chalk.Tuesday, Seiler asked all the school's clubs' members to meet during the activity period in the cafeteria. Not knowing why, their principal then explained that he wanted them to all go outside and draw positive images along with feel-good quotes and sayings. He handed out sheets with 40 quotes and sayings and said the students could use their own but they had to be approved by him first. Then he set about 45 seventh- and eighth-grade students free to do their chalk magic."It was great seeing them out there, living life," Seiler said."Everyone had a smile on their faces," Skyler said.Skyler, Seiler and teachers were thrilled to see the reaction of the students when they arrived for school the next morning."The majority went out of their way to read all the messages, even using entrance doors they never use just so they could read all of them," Seiler said.Pleasant Valley High School began the Hope Initiative two years ago that went viral throughout the district with amazing results.Seiler said he became inspired by Kerri Jahelka, founder of Dedicated Fitness Inc. of Palmerton, when she came to the school and presented a "Positive is Powerful" assembly."Three simple words but powerful words. In our morning and afternoon announcements, the kids will always hear me say, 'Be safe, be positive and more importantly, be kind to one another,'" Seiler said. When asked why this was important to her, Skyler said, "Because they are human beings and special in this world. I wanted them to know there were lots of positive quotes out there to help them be happy."
