Multiple races in Monroe County

The choices of voters in Tuesday's General Election in Monroe County will be plentiful.

That's because in addition to casting their vote for the Pennsylvania governor candidate of their choice, county voters will have decisions to make in two congressional districts, two Pennsylvania Senate races and three state House of Representatives contests.Of course, the keynote contest on top of the ballot is that of Gov. Tom Corbett, a Republican, being challenged by Democrat Tom Wolf for the four-year term.In the 17th Congressional District, the race is between Rep. Matt Cartwright, a Democratic incumbent, and Republican challenger Dr. David Moylan.Meanwhile, voters in the county will also have choices in balloting for the 10th Congressional District, Pennsylvania Senate Districts 22 and 40, the latter being a newly formed district, and for Pennsylvania House seats in the 115th, 176th and 189th districts. The new Senate seat encompasses 43 of the 50 election precincts in Monroe, including the townships of Chestnuthill, Eldred, Hamilton, Jackson, Middle Smithfield, Paradise, Pocono, Polk, Ross, Smithfield, Stroud, Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock and the boroughs of Delaware Water Gap, East Stroudsburg, Mount Pocono and Stroudsburg. It also includes the townships of Allen, Bushkill, East Allen, Forks, Hanover, Lehigh, Lower Mount Bethel, Lower Nazareth, Moore, Plainfield, Upper Mount Bethel, Upper Nazareth and Washington and the boroughs of Bangor, Bath, Chapman, East Bangor, Nazareth, Pen Argyl, Portland, Roseto, Walnutport and Wind Gap, all in Northampton County.Current Pennsylvania Rep. Mario Scavello of Mount Pocono, a Republican, is running for the four-year term. His opponent is Democrat Mark Aurand of Nazareth. The seven remaining districts in the county are part of the 22nd Senatorial District where the incumbent, Democrat John P. Blake of Jermyn, is running for another four-year term and is challenged by Republican Joe Albert of Scranton. Voters in Barrett, Coolbaugh and Price townships will vote in this race, as will voters in all of Lackawanna County and Pittston Township and the boroughs of Avoca, Dupont and Duryea, all in Luzerne County.Rep. Tom Marino, a Republican from Williamsport, is running for re-election to another two-year term in the 10th Congressional District and is challenged by another Lycoming County resident, Democrat Scott F. Brion of Liberty, and Independent Nicholas Troiano of Williamsport. The district includes parts of Monroe, including the townships of Barrett, Jackson, Paradise, Pocono, Price and Stroud (districts two, three and four) and the boroughs of East Stroudsburg and Stroudsburg. Also in that district is all of Bradford, Juniata, Lycoming, Mifflin, Pike, Snyder, Sullivan and Susquehanna, Union and Wayne counties and parts of Lackawanna, Northumberland, Perry and Tioga counties.Scavello is relinquishing his seat in the 115th District, opting to run for the new Senate seat. That has set up an open battle between Maureen Madden of Tobyhanna, a Democrat, and Republican David Parker of East Stroudsburg. The district includes Coolbaugh, Paradise, Price and Stroud (districts one through six, but not district seven) townships and East Stroudsburg and Stroudsburg boroughs. In the 176th District, which was created by redistricting, the race is between Democrat Hope Smith of Kunkletown and Republican Jack Rader Jr. Reeders. The 176th District includes Chestnuthill, Eldred, Jackson, Pocono, Polk, Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock townships and Mount Pocono Borough. In the 189th District, incumbent Rep. Rosemary Brown of East Stroudsburg, a Republican, is seeking another term and is challenged by Democrat Elizabeth Forrest of Dingmans Ferry. That district encompasses Barrett, Hamilton, Middle Smithfield, Ross, Smithfield and Stroud (district seven) townships, as well as Delaware Water Gap. Also included in the district are the townships of Delaware, Lehman and Porter in Pike County. All of the House seats are for two-year terms.
