Students walk for a cause

Keep calm, and walk on.

The weather was warm, the sun was shining and the streets were filled with students who walked for a worthwhile cause.Sounds like a match made in heaven, much as it was when St. John Neumann Regional School students recently took to the streets for the school's annual walkathon. The theme of this year's walkathon was flight, according to Sue Arnold.Students began their day Oct. 24 with Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Palmerton. They then proceeded to the gym for a stretch session courtesy of Dedicated Fitness of Palmerton. From there, they took part in the outdoor trek in and around the borough park, as well as throughout town.Students in grades K through three from the school's Slatington campus, as well as students in grades four through eight from its Palmerton campus, walked in the event.Afterward, students were treated to an educational demonstration on flight courtesy of The Franklin Institute.Sister Virginia Stephanie said the school was pleased with the support it received at this year's event."Parent involvement at St. John Neumann Regional School is essential to our family atmosphere, as well as to our financial success in order to deliver top-notch education to all of our students," Stephanie said. While it's too early to tell how much money was raised from this year's walkathon, the event is one of the school's largest fundraisers of the year.Last year's event raised $10,283, according to committee chair Chuck Cornmesser.Money raised from past years has helped to update the school's computer labs, purchase additional Smartboards (interactive whiteboards), new textbooks and educational field trips.
