Peters students learn about flag etiquette

It was a lesson learned in the traditional method of how to fold the American Flag.

Kindergarten pupils at Peters Elementary School also learned how to recite the Pledge of Allegiance as part of an assembly held Tuesday in the school gymnasium.The assembly was conducted by Karen Bandzi, president of the Ladies Auxiliary to R.W. Fritzinger VFW Post 7215 in Walnutport, which worked in conjunction with the VFW."I think the main benefit for the children is learning the flag etiquette and the proper words to the pledge," Bandzi said.Bandzi was accompanied by state Rep. Julie Harhart (R-Lehigh/ Northampton); Richard Sosoka, a retired Sgt. Major from the U.S. Army; Simon Bandzi, Jr., a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, Sandy Hopkins, Auxiliary member; Kathleen Grammes, Auxiliary conductress/ trustee, and Matt Szuchyt, local government liaison for Sen. Pat Browne.Principal Paul Leonzi welcomed those in attendance.This is the 11th year that the group visited area schools to give presentations about the history of the Pledge of Allegiance, and how to respect and display the flag.As part of the assembly, pupils were treated to an informative video: A Childrens Guide to the Pledge of Allegiance.Afterward, Bandzi, who also serves as president of District 20, picked two boys and two girls to lead them all in saying the pledge.Lastly, each child received a certificate that they learned to say the pledge, a small American flag, Ladies Auxiliary pencil, and two coloring books, one from Harhart, and the other from the office of Browne.
