Two men charged in Carbon burglary

Police have charged two Lehighton men with breaking into a Penn Forest Township home on Tuesday.

Zachiry Derre Kerschner, 20, of 44 Boyko Drive, was charged with entering an occupied home, criminal trespass, driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, and criminal mischief. He's in Carbon County prison under $50,000 cash bail.Justin Ramel Vereen, 20, of 262 S. First St., was charged with burglary of an occupied home, criminal mischief, and criminal trespass. He's also in Carbon County prison under $75,000 cash bail.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by state trooper Daniel Marotta of the Fern Ridge barracks, here's what happened:On Wednesday, Marotta was sent to a home on Cold Spring Drive in the Penn Forest Streams development to investigate a possible burglary. Once there, he spoke with a security guard who said he had been called to the home by a neighbor because people were breaking in.Marotta saw that two screens had been removed from basement windows. The guard said he had seen a dark gray car in the driveway.Marotta spoke with a neighbor who said she saw two men in a dark gray car with tinted windows at the house, and had never seen them there before.She said one of the men, who was black and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and shorts, was behind the house, near where the screens had been removed.The other man, who was white and wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and shorts, was near the car.The woman asked the men if she could help them. One of the men said they were trying to get to Route 903. She gave them directions, and they left.Marotta looked for the car in the neighborhood, and found it on Wolf Drive.The men were detained and the neighbor identified them as the ones she had seen at the house. Both were arrested and taken to the barracks.
