Lehighton Council approves towing cars in 'no parking' zones

People who park their vehicles in Lehighton must follow the posted no parking signs or run the risk of having their ride towed.

On a unanimous measure, borough council on Monday agreed to have township solicitor Jim Nanovic make an amendment to a borough ordinance to authorize towing when "no parking" signs are posted.Borough Police Chief Brian Biechy explained how the police department has dealt with the matter in the past."No parking is no parking," Biechy said. "My opinion is if you're there, you're impeding the work, then tow the car."Councilman Scott Rehrig said he believes there should be a time constraint of when the street will be closed unless there is an extreme emergency.Rehrig said if there's an instance where no parking is posted on a street and there's a car parked there, putting a ticket on the vehicle doesn't remove the car.Amendmentto snow removal/ parking ordinancesAlso on Monday, council, on a narrow 4-3 vote, agreed to adopt an ordinance that amends chapters related to the quality of life ordinance for snow removal, as well as plowing, and odd/even parking.Council members John Kreitz, Darryl Arner, Joe Flickinger and Helen Torok were in favor. Opposed were Rehrig, Bessie Bauchspies, and council President Grant Hunsicker.Rehrig said he had a problem with snow and ice removal from sidewalks.Hunsicker said, "Unless everybody can do it, I don't go along with it."Borough solicitor Jim Nanovic said the amendment is necessary because the borough has two inconsistent ordinances.Nanovic said passing the measure will make the two ordinances consistent.
