Fillies in final again

MINERSVILLE - Momentum is one of the greatest mysteries of the sports world.

Tri-Valley ended the first two games of its District XI class A semifinals match against Marian on runs of 7-2 and 5-3 respectively. Thus being said, it was Marian's early momentum in each game which earned the Fillies a sweep of Tri-Valley, 25-17, 25-15, 25-11.The Fillies enjoyed early advantages of 13-3, 15-7, and 10-0 in each game that made it tough for the Bulldogs to claw back."It was good work tonight," said Marian head coach John Fallabel. "We didn't have a lot of intensity in practice last night. I wasn't happy with everything tonight, there wasn't intensity tonight either. It's a long season and we need to be pushed."The 2014 Fillies are deep and talented enough that when they lack this intensity Fallabel speaks of, someone always seems to provide a spark.Jasmine Mooney delivered an explosion of offense for the Fillies in the second game of the contest. The 5'10" freshman manufactured six kills during the second game that helped put the Bulldogs on a tighter leash."She definitely had a heck of a night," said the Marian coach. "We have so many girls that contribute, and you saw what she is capable of tonight."Marian seemed to feed off of Mooney's strong play, as it closed the door on Tri-Valley early in the final game. Abby O'Donnell ended the match with 28 assists, as Abigail Stankiewitch added to her sensational junior campaign with 11 more kills. The Fillies (21-0) rolled on all cylinders in the third game and truly displayed why they earned the top seed."We knew Marian would serve hard and hit hard," explained Tri-Valley head coach Heather Drumheller. "This week in practice we were hitting as hard we could at them. I wish we could have had a little better of a showing, I know they're capable of playing better. We had highs and lows tonight, but we just couldn't generate enough offense.Drumheller's squad was motivated, vocal, and never held their heads down at any point in the match. The Bulldogs played defense about as well as anyone could against the Fillies. Alexis Artz was a Tri-Valley standout in the match with 25 digs."This is my fourth year coaching and I've had these seniors all four years," said Drumheller. "Seeing these girls come all of this way each of these four years was special. The competition is always tough at this point. The girls have improved and gotten better every year and that's the nice thing about them."Marian has beaten Nativity twice this season and now has a date with the Hilltoppers tomorrow night at Minersville, at 7p.m. Both teams will be rolling into the finals with momentum of different fashion. Marian is on a 21-game win streak, as Nativity is coming off of a thrilling victory over Salem Christian which came down to a final fifth game."The more you beat someone, the higher probability it is that they will beat you," Fallabel said referring to the famous theory of legendary Pittsburgh Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince. "We're going to need to go into that match with a ton of intensity. You have to be able to bring your own game to any opponent all of the time. This is what it should be, Nativity and us again."
