Palmerton area schools look ahead

Palmerton Area School District continues to focus its sights on future improvements.

Director Susan Debski said at this week's school board meeting that she wants to see the district revisit her prior request for a five-year plan.Debski most recently brought the matter before the board in August, at which time she said the district may eventually have to look at redistricting.Superintendent Scot Engler then spoke to the matter."We're intending to put together a long-range financial plan for the district," Engler said. "We are working on a long-range facilities plan."Debski said her concerns haven't been addressed due to the personnel changes that have recently occurred in the district."I just really believe this needs to be discussed," Debski said. "We keep trying to get this done and we just keep putting it off."Director Charles Gildner disagreed."I don't think we're falling behind," Gildner said. "I think we need to look at what we can do now, and I think we're doing that."Engler reassured Debski the district is working on it."It's in the works," he said. "There is a list."Debski said she's heard that before under the previous leadership the district was under."In my five years on the board, I've been hearing that," she said.Director Sherry Haas then weighed in on the situation."All I see is improvement," Haas said. "Every day for the past year or so, when I visit the schools, I see nothing but positive.""We are blossoming and growing."Board President Tammy Recker said she, too, believes the district is "moving forward.""We know that we need to make improvements," Recker said. "It's happening; we are moving in the right direction."The matter may be revisited at the board's committee workshop at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 4.
