Carbon County is looking to save money on its light bill.
On Thursday, the county commissioners voted to advertise for bids for the installation of lighting retrofit equipment in the courthouse, courthouse annex, 76 Susquehanna St. building and the county prison in Nesquehoning. The cost of the project is estimated to be over $100,000, which will be covered through two Northeast Pennsylvania Alliance grants and county matching funds.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said the bids would be for the installation of the lights. The county would purchase the LED lighting equipment from state contract."We need to get the project going," Nothstein said, adding that the fixtures need to be installed by the end of the year. The commissioners said the project should save the county in its lighting bills.Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard commended Linda Dopira in the county purchasing department for all her hard work with getting the specifications drawn up.The county has been talking about doing a lighting retrofit in its building for several years, but funding was always an issue. In April, the county received a $48,284.34 matching grant from NEPA through the NEPA Efficient Lighting Grant program; and an additional $25,000 from NEPA after another county cut part of its project, freeing up some funds. In other matters, the commissioners approved a $25 increase to pavilion rentals at Mauch Chunk Lake Park for the 2015 season. County residents will now pay $125 a day for a pavilion, and noncounty residents will pay $175 a day.The commissioners also approved the appointment of Mary E. Reiner of Lehighton as a part-time LPN at the county prison, effective Oct. 27.
