Police conduct armed search in Palmerton

A Palmerton man has been arrested, while a Lehighton female remains at large following a search Wednesday morning that also involved various police from Carbon County and state police personnel.

Borough patrolman Shawn Leadbetter said that at around 10 a.m., police spotted James Smiley, 42, of Palmerton, and Michelle Kobal, 44, of Lehighton, both of whom have active warrants out for their arrest from the county probation department.

At that time, Leadbetter said Smiley and Kobal proceeded to take off by foot into a wooded area behind 769 Edgemont Ave.

Smiley was apprehended and arrested, and is currently incarcerated in Carbon County prison, Leadbetter said.

However, he said Kobal, who had an aggressive pit bull with her, proceeded further down into the wooded area in the vicinity of the Village at Palmerton.

Leadbetter said the search for Kobal, who has an active probation violation at this time, continues. Palmerton Police requested a canine unit, but one was not available, he said.

Kobal is not considered to be a threat, said Leadbetter, but she does have a pit bull with her.

Also assisting Palmerton Police were the Lehighton Police Department, East Penn Township Police Department, Franklin Township Police Department, and state police at Lehighton.
