Pleasant Vy. falls to Nazareth

NAZARETH As simple as it sounds, the team that creates more scoring opportunities normally comes out victorious in a field hockey game.

Nazareth clearly out-produced Pleasant Valley offensively during its 2-0 District 11 Class AAA preliminary round victory on Wednesday."We played the game we were capable of playing, I told them to have fun and take it to them," said Nazareth head coach Marissa Rotz. "I made sure we worked on our stick-to-stick passing this week, being cohesive, and we tried to get into a nice rhythm and flow."The eighth-seeded Blue Eagles were certainly in a rhythm as they had possession and applied pressure for about two-thirds of the opening half.Despite Nazareth earning a pair of corners within the first five minutes, the Lady Bears and senior goalkeeper Rachel Wild held the Blue Eagles scoreless. Wild has six saves in the game."I have three seniors who have been very solid for us," explained Pleasant Valley head coach Jessica Frantz. "Rachel is one of them and she has broken school records for career saves and single season saves. She's really great and going to be hard to replace."Pleasant Valley had a stretch of about four minutes in the middle of the first half that it attacked furiously. The Bears, who were seeded ninth in the distirct tourney, manufactured four of their five corners in the contest during that span, but couldn't put the ball in the cage. Ann Marie Butchkowski is another Lady Bear senior who was right in the thick of the action."I never saw her play a bad game," said Frantz of her senior star. "Even when she would come off the field and say that she played poorly, she didn't in my eyes. I believe she's been solid every game for me over the course of my two years here."The rain started coming down as the teams headed into intermission in a scoreless tie."We played Pleasant Valley early on this season and we knew they were a good team," Rotz said. "After the scoreless first half we knew that we had to come out stronger in the second half to beat them."As the rain started to pour down, the Blue Eagles started pouring on some offensive attacks as they accumulated 13 second half corners and eight shots on goal. Ally Stitzer finally broke the tie with 11 minutes left in the match, and her teammate Kassie Behler sealed the deal with just over four minutes remaining."We played together as a team, connected well, and were able to put some balls in the goal cage," Rotz said. "We were able to finish in a total team effort. Everyone contributed and I think it was a very nice game. We have a great group of 33 girls and they are a pleasure to coach."Pleasant Valley's season is over, but it surely wasn't a disappointment after returning only three starters from 2013."It wasn't the season we had last year, but it was good to make it to districts," Frantz said. "This season we wanted to work together on our defense and team passing. We graduated our starting defenders coming into this year and I think the girls back there did a fantastic job and came a long way."We had our ups and downs because we were a new team coming together this year. I have some very good talent that I'm losing for next year. Annie (Butchkowski), Rachel (Wild), and Abby (Roselli) were my returning starters and are really going to be missed. Those three girls and the rest of the team gave a great effort tonight and I think both teams played phenomenal."
