Inmate sentenced in assault of guards

A former inmate at the Carbon County prison who assaulted three correctional officers and a fellow inmate was sentenced to a state prison term on Tuesday after entering a guilty plea.

Walter Alexander Bond, 19, no permanent address, pleaded guilty to one count of assault by a prisoner, a felony two. He also pleaded in a second assault incident at the prison to one count of simple assault.Judge Joseph J. Matika sentenced him to serve a total of 36 to 72 months in a state correctional institution. The prison term will be followed by one year of state probation.Nesquehoning police filed the charges in both cases. The assault on a prisoner charge stemmed from an incident at 7:56 p.m. Sept. 15, 2013, at the jail. Police said Bond began assaulting another inmate, identified as Benjamin F. Williams, in the latter's cell that was located in the restricted housing unit of the facility, by stabbing him with a pen.Police said correctional officer Larry Williams entered the cell and began to intervene to restrain Bond, but the inmate continued to assault the other inmate, trying to stab him multiple times and kicking him while yelling that he was going to kill him.During the struggle, correctional officer Williams suffered serious injury to his shoulder.Police said multiple other guards raced to the scene to assist in breaking up the fracas, during which time correctional officers James Lang and Joseph Gurka assisted in restraining Bond while he continued to fight. Police said Lang suffered an injury to his neck while Gurka was punched in the face.Bond, who is currently an inmate at the state correctional institution in Coal Township, Northumberland County, denied that he stabbed anyone with a pen during the incident, but did admit kicking the other inmate and causing injuries to the guards.Bond also told Matika that he had been in and out of prison since he was 17. He estimated he has spent only four months of the past two years free from incarceration.Because of the injuries sustained by the guards, Bond faces a major restitution bill. The second assault incident occurred on Aug. 30, 2013, at the prison. Bond admitted punching inmate Michael Macaluso during a dispute. In addition to the jail term, Bond was ordered to make total restitution of $38,246.14 to the county's workers' compensation carrier for the injuries suffered by correction officer Larry Williams and two others. Williams suffered the most serious injuries.Bond was also ordered to get a mental health evaluation, render at total of 150 hours of community service when paroled, attend and complete anger management counseling, supply a DNA sample, and pay costs of about $1,000.Bond is currently serving a two-and-a-half to five-year state prison term. Bond said he has about six more months to serve on that sentence. Matika ruled his sentence would run concurrent, meaning of the three-year minimum imposed by the county court, Bond would still have about two-and-a-half more years to serve before being eligible for parole.
